Born in Banbury in 1896 (4th qtr 3a:958) son of Ernest Edwin and Lizzie HAMER (née JORDON)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at 5 Grove Street, Banbury with his father Ernest E HAMER [28] tailor born Dover; his moher Lizzie [26] born Banbury; visitor Edward JONES [23] wood sawyer born Shalstone, Bucks.

1911 census...Aged 14, tailor's apprentice, he was at Fair View, Prospect Row, Banbury with his parents; brother Nroman[8] and three boarders.

In 1917 in Maldon he married Florence KING [7-3-1879]. She had one child by previous husband (Edna KING 13-2-1904] The address given for his widow was 9 St. Mary's Place, Bridewell Row, then 4 Chequer House, Bridewell Place, Bury St.Edmunds, later 41 Guildhall Street, Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Banbury, resident in Bury St.Edmunds.
On 29th September the objective for the battalion were Rumilly Trench and Rumilly Support and to exploit any success with the taking of Rumilly village.They successfully, despite heavy opposition, took Rumilly Trench and gained a foothold in Rumilly Support, at the cost of 37 killed.
