1891 census...Aged 1, he was at 7 Zebra Court, College Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Thomas HAMMOND [44] Marine Stores dealer born Bermondsey, his mother Caroline [39] born Shadwell, Norfolk; sister Lavinia [5] and brother Charles [3]. All the children born in Bury St.Edmunds His father died in 1898. 1901 census...Aged 11, he was at 4 Baker's Terrace, Bury St.Edmunds with his widowed mother (charwoman) and brother Charles (errand boy). 1911 census...Aged 21, a carter's labourer, he was at 5 Pleasant Row, Mill Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his mother. He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He died in Aylesbury ( Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital ?) from Septic Bronchitis.
No medal index card has been found. The 2nd/5th Battalion was a home sevice battalion, training recruits and preparing wounded for return to service.
