Born 1890 in Ashton under Lyne (2nd qtr 8d:559) son of Henry and Emma Elizabeth HARWOOD (née PRYKE)

His father died, aged 46, in Bury St.Edmunds in 1909.

1911 census...Not found in this census, but he was in the Army. At 44 West Road, Bury St.Edmunds were his widowed mother (milliner); sisters Emma Elizabeth (dress maker), Ada Sarah, Ivy Elizabeth Pryke and May Flora [8]; brothers John Cracknell [10] and Frederick Cecil [6]. May and Frederick born Bury St.Edmunds

He enlisted in Colchester. Unfortunately CWGC have him in 67th Brigade (war diary not found) and his CO's letter says 169th Brigade and August 31st 1916 is not in their war diary. As such it would impossible at present to pin down where he was killed. There is however a CWGC concentration card which details exactly where he was first buried, before re-interment in Quarry Cemetery in 1919
