Born in 1896 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:806) son of George and Fanny HAYWARD (née ASHEN)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at 60 Southgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father George HAYWARD [35] labourer born Bardwell; his mother Fanny [29]; sister Edith [1]. All except his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 14, an under gardener, he was at Mill House, Nowton Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; sisters Hilda (Edith), Alice [3] and Annie [1]; brothers Frank [9] and George [5]; aunt Harriett ASHEN [37] laundress. His mother had borne 7 children but one, George Norman, had died aged 1.

The address on the pension card for his mother is 10a Nowton Road, Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The battalion were at Annezin on 17th April 1918.. conference of Company Commanders to discuss impending operation
4 pm Operation cancelled...Harrassing fire 20,000 rounds...Evacuation 2 O.R....Rejoined 1 O.R.
