Born in Victoria Park in 1895 (3rd qtr 1895 HaCKNEY 1B:549) son of Francis and Elizabeth Victoria HERBERT (née WALTER)

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 55 Trego Road, St Mary Stratford Bow with his father Francis HERBERT [38]labourer in rubber factory, born Victoria Park; his mother Elizabeth V [32] born Bethnal Green; sisters Lizzie [10] born Hackney and LouisA [1] born Bow; brothers John W [8] born Hackney and Frederick [4] born Bow.

1911 census...Aged 16, a paper seller, he was at 12 Chapman Road, Hackney with his parents; sisters Elizabeth (dyers ironer) and Louisa [11]; brothers Frederick Thomas and Sidney. His mother had borne 11 children but lost 5 of them.

Pension card has his mother at 12 Chapman Road, Victoria Park, Hackney His parents do not appear to move from this address, so the connection with Bury St.Edmunds is still unknown.


He enlisted in Hackney.
The war diary has not been found on line. CWGC have none of the battalion killed in action on 13th, just 4 dying of wounds at different places. It was the time of the Battle of the Lys and the battalion did suffer considerable casualties during the period 10th to 17th April, amounting to over 500.
