HERRINGTON, Frank J "William"

No.40269, Private, Frank J ( William) HERRINGTON
Aged 26

7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment
formerly 5/5362 Norfolk Regiment
Killed in Action on Monday, 11th February 1918

Born 1891 (4th qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:7) son of Charles William and Katherine Jane HERRINGTON (née CARTER)

The problem here is the way the family registered names at birth, then used alternatives, but if the ages are believable, the girls names are more accurate, the boys however are a nightmare. Added to which the 1911 census records 12 children, all surviving, BUT there were 13. Herrington-Carter births amounted to 9 girls and 4 boys . Nellie (18 months old in 1911) seems to have escaped registration, unless she is the illegitimate girl born in Tendring in 1909, possibly the daughter of one of the elder sisters. As to boys, Charles John was born in 1888 - OK and Bertie Isaac was born in 1906, again OK but Frank William was born in 1892 and Fred in 1895 so they are reversed in the 1901 census. The "J" for a middle name rather than William is another anomaly. Despite all this, there is enough evidence to relate the soldier to this family. Fred served 1st in the 3rd Suffolks and transferred to the 24th London Regt, then was wounded in October 1918

1891 census...(In this census Fred and Frank have been reversed) Aged 9, he was at 8 Lion Court, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Charles W HERRINGTON [40]domestic gardener; his mother Clara (Katherine) [39]; sisters Alice [18] dressmaker, Jessie [26], Florence [14], Eleanor [10], Maud [7], Louisa [4], Lily [2] and Violet [2 months]; brothers Charles [13] errand boy] and Fred ( entered as Frank) [5].

1901 census...Aged 19, Boot show porter, he was visiting his sister Florence and her husband Frederick TITCHMARSH and their family at No 1 School Hall Lane, Bury St.Edmunds. His parents were at 1 and 2 Lambert Place, Bury St Edmunds, with his sisters Maud, Louisa, Lily, Violet and Nellie [18 months]; brothers Frederick [15] and Bertie [5] 1911 census...Aged
