Born in 1889 (1st qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:720) son of Charles and Sarah HILL (née ROLFE)

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at 98 Westgate, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Charles [28] cola merchant's labourer born Lawshall; his mother Sarah [27] and brother John J [4 months].All except his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1901 census...Aged 12, he was at 20 The Butts with his parents, brothers John and William [8]

1911 census...Aged 22 he was a private in the Army, the Lincolnshire Regt, at Fort Grange, near Gosport, Hants. His parents were still at 20 The Butts with his brothers William (blacksmith's striker), Arthur [8] and Alfred [6]; sister Susan [10]


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 6th August 1907, giving his age as 18 years 6 months, a baker, born in Bury St.Edmunds, serving in the 2nd Volunteer Bn Suffolk Regt. He was 5 feet 3.25 inches tall, weighed 110 lbs, chest 32.5 to 35 inches, brown eyes, dark brown hair. Church of England.
He was promoted L/Cpl 15/7/1911, paid L/Cpl 21/8/1911 and L/Sgt 5/12/1914. He was in Bermuda from 5/8/1914 to 19/10/1914 and with the BEF on 4/11/1914.
Admitted to N0.13 General Hospital, Boulogne on 14th March 1915 with gun shot wounds to the legs, and died on 16th. His battalion were in the line at Neuve Chapelle at the time
His belongings, consisting of whistle and strap; watch; watch chain; Rosary; card case; 7 photos; set of ?; letters were sent to is father at 20 the Butts, Bury St.Edmunds.
Army Form 5080 had father Charles and mother Sarah at 31 Westgate Road, Bury St.Edmunds, together with brothers JohnThomas [28], Arthur [16] Alfred [14] and sister Susan [18]. Brother William was at 14 Cullum Road. Form signed on 9th May 1919.
