HILL, William Charles

No.6028227, Trooper, William Charles HILL
Aged 28

153rd (8th Battn, Essex Regiment) Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps
Died of his Wounds on Thursday, 26th August 1944

Born in 2nd December 1915 (4th qtr 1915 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:1574) son of Paul William and Margaret Sophie HILL (née BRABROOK). in 1939 Margaret was at 156 Prior's Road, Bury St.Edmunds with her brother Horace BRABROOK, and a young evacuee, Charlotte Fitzpatrick ( 2 closed entries). His father died in 1942, where he was in 1939 is not known.

William married Violet G CARTER in Bury St.Edmunds in 1937. They had four children, Pauline [1938], Anthony W G [1939], Yvonne E B [1940] and Christine A [1942]. They were living at 10 Willow Cottages, Lodge Road, Chelmsford. William was an upholsterer. His death was registered in East Glamorgan.

The reason for the two badges is that in line with with most converted infantry regiments of the Royal Armoured Corps, the men wore their own regimental badge on the usual black beret of the tank men, in this case the Essex Regiment's 8th battalion was converted to the armoured role in December 1941. Only two days after William's death the regiment was disbanded due to losses (many of them on 16th July) and the remaining men used to reinforce other units.
