Born in Bury St.Edmunds (3rd qtr 1921 4a:1712) son of Frederick J and Bessie HOWARD (née CLAXTON). In 1939 his parents and sister Kathleen were at 19 St Andrews Street North, Bury St.Edmunds, his father was a painter.

The 20th to 29th March saw Plymouth suffer the worst bombing raids. Around 30,000 people ended up homeless.
