Born in Great Welnetham in 1898 (2nd qtr Thingoe 4a:806) son of George and Lavinia HUMPHREY (née GRIMWOOD)

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 6 Hayward's Cottages, Great Welnetham with his father George HUMPHREY [37] railway platelayer born Kelvedon, Essex; his mother Lavinia [31] born Gt Welnetham; brothers Harryn E [12], William [8], George [4] and Kimberley [8 months]; sisters Edith [10] and Alice [7]. Alice was born in Bury St.Edmunds, the rest of the children in Great Welnetham.

1911 census...Aged 13, he was at 9 Nowton Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brothers Henry E (domestic gardener), William (domestic gardener), George (house boy), Kimberley and John A E [2]; sisters Beatrice M [8] and Frances L [4]. The two youngest were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

The family were later at 8 Hollow Road, Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
On the 13th July the battalion were moving up to the line at De Wippe Cabaret from camp. It looks as if a shell took out 3 of the battalion as three of them are buried at Canada Farm which was a dressing station close by at the time.
