Born in 1891 (4th qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:740) son of Arthur William and Hannah HUNT (née HUNT )

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at 2 Friar's Lane, Bury St.Edmunds wwith his father Arthur William HUNT [35] domestic coachman; his mother Anna [36]; brothers Charles Frederick [7] and Arthur James [5]. All were born in Bury St Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 19, a brewer's clerk, he was at 14 Southgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents and brother Charles (shop porter) and Arthur (domestic gardener).His mother had lost 3 of her 6 children.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The newspaper photograph was taken when he was serving in the Scottish Rifles (Cameronians). The war diary unfortunately has the narrative for that time as an appendix, which has not been found.They were however in the vicinity of Mametz Wood.





William Hunt is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme pier/face 5C/12C
