Born in 1898 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:820) son of Isaac and Emily KNIGHTS(née AUSTEN). His mother seems to have died around the time of his birth.
His father and siblings are covered in the entry for his brother Arthur
1901 census...Aged 3 he was at 79 Eastgate Street, Bury St,Edmunds with his uncle Harry WOOLNOUGH [33] blacksmith born Stowmarket and aunt Kate (née KNIGHTS) 1911 census...Aged 13, he was at 37 Cressing Road, Braintree with his uncle and aunt WOOLNOUGH. He enlisted in Warley, Essex. The 10th Lincolns were known as the ""Grimsby Chums" On the 27th August they were around Ruby Farm, just east of Hargicourt. 17 of the battalion were killed that day, 7 having no known grave.
