Born in 1884 in Holloway (2nd qtr Islington 1b:307) son of Patrick and Sally Ansley McMULLEN (née WILLIAMS). "Soldiers Died" has him born in Bury St. Edmunds. His father died in ? and his mother married Thomas E BROUGHTON in 1888 in Bury St.Edmunds.

1891 census...Aged 7, he was at 1 Short Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds with his stepfather Thomas C BROUGHTON [32] bricklayer's labourer born London; his mother [41] born Plymton, Devon; half sisters Mary Ann [2] and Margaret [10 months] BROUGHTON, both born Bury St.Edmunds; sister Minnie A [9] born Wembley; step-grandfather David BROUGHTON [66] born Cambridge.

1901 census...Aged 17 (as Charles) he seems to be a house man at Beaumont College, Egham. At 1 Short Brackland still were his stepfather, mother, sister Minnie and half sisters Mary and Margaret.

1911 census...Aged 26,(as Charles) he was a private in the 2nd Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in South Africa


He enlisted in London and died of malaria in Salonika.
