Born in 1886 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:692) son of William and Emma Amelia MINGAY (née PECK)

1891 census...Aged 4, he was at the Coalyards, Fornham All Saints, with his father William MINGAY [27] maltster's labourer born Westley; his mother Emma [27]; brothers Frederick [6] and William [1] born Fornham All Saints; sister Kate [3]. All except his father and brother William were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1901 census...Aged 14, an errand boy, he was at 73 Chalk Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brothers Frederick (clothier's porter), William J [11], Henry S [8], Arthur [4] and Albert C [3 months); sisters Kate, Beatrice [6] and Ethel M [2]

1911 census...Aged 24, a butcher, he was still at 73 Chalk Lane with his parents; brothers Frederick (wine merchant's cellarman), Harry (stone mason's labourer), Arthur (clothier's errand boy, Albert and Bertie [5]; sisters Kate and Beatrice (both laundresses), Ethel and Hetty [7]

His brother Arthur died in Gallipoli in August 1915 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The battalion arrived in the Ypres Salient from near Peronne on 1st February. War Diary, at Railway Wood, 3rd February 1917
At 1:10 am the enemy blew a mine on the M [?] Company's front. We occupied and consolidated the crater. No hostile attack nor bombardment followed. Relieved at night by 17th Sherwood Foresters and proceeded to Ecole, leaving one company in support line.
