Born in 1877 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:559) son of Charles and Mahala NUNN (née OAKES)

1881 census...Aged 4, he was at 12 Maynewater Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Charles NUNN [29] brewer's labourer, born Chedburgh; his mother Martha [29]; brothers John Thomas [6] and William Edward [3 months]; sister Kate Sarah [2]. All except his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1891 census...Aged 14, page boy, he was at 16 Maynewater Square, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents (mother now Mahala); sisters Kate [12], Eliza [8], Ella [6] and Ethel [4]; brother William [10].

He married Barnham born Edith Elizabeth CLARKE [29-11-1877].

1901 census...Aged 24, labourer, he was at 10 St Botolph's Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his wife Edith E [23] born Barnham; daughter Ellen M.C. [4] and son Frederick Charles [1]

1911 census...Aged 33, (now Frederick) a brewer's labourer, he was at 25 Westgate Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his wife Edith E [32]; daughters Ellen [14], Kate [Lilian] Kate [25-9-1907], and Madge {Constance] Madge [30-9-1910]; sons Frederick [11], Edward Thomas [11-9-1905] and William Percy [14-7-1909]; mother in law, widow Harriet CLARKE [70] born Stowmarket.

They went on to have two more children, Norman Frank [30-12-1912] and Alfred Jack Kitchener [18-3-1915]. His family moved later to 59 Guildhall Street, Bury St.Edmunds.


He attested on Bury St.Edmunds.

The battalion were in the support line starting to relieve the 9th Essex in front line .During the relief the enemy shelled our leading Coy as it crossed open ground, west of the railway. Not much of an entry in the war dairy, but the shelling explains the deaths of 8 men, none of which has a known grave.
