in St James' Bury St.Edmunds on 18th February 1899, son of George and Deborah Ellen NUNN (née KNOCK). 1901 census...Aged 2, he was at 6 Eastgate, Bury St Edmunds with his father George NUNN [38] fish hawker and paper seller; his mother Deborah E [35] laundress, born Hundon; sisters Edith [10] and Ethel M [4]; brother George [8]. All except his mother were born in Bury St. Edmunds. His father died in 1904 and his mother married Valentine DOWNING in 1906 1911 census...Aged 12, he was at 39 Long Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds with his step father Valentive DOWNING [45] pianist born Hoxton, London; his mother, brothers George (carman), William Cyril[10] and Percy Reginald [4].; sisters Edith Ellen RAYNER (now married to Ernest J RAYNER) and Ethel May. CWGC have his mother, Mrs D E Downing, at 3 Alexandra Cottages, Northgate Street, Bury St Edmunds. On Army Form 5080 his mother has entered herself at 3 Alexandra Cottages, Bury St Edmunds, his brothers George Sydney [27] School ? Bury St Edmunds and William Cyril [20] Suffolk Regt, in India, sisters Edith Helen RAYNER [29], near the school, Nacton and Ethel May [24] with her mother in Bury St Edmunds |

He attested in Bury St Edmunds on 25th October 1916, giving his date of birth as 24th January 1899, a maltster, born in Bury St Edmunds, living at 3 Northgate, Bury St Edmunds. He was 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighed 117 lbs, chest 30.5" to 33", next of kin, his mother Ellen DOWNING. He was posted to the Reserves and then mobilised into the 35th Training Reserve Battalion on 20th March 1917. Posted to 27th Training Battalion 6th June 1917 and then to Dovercourt on the 249th Infantry Battalion on 29th August 1917. transferred to Bedfordshire Regt, then 1st/15th Herts Regt on 4th April 1918 before embarking at Dover on 5th April for Calais and transferred again, to the North Staffordshire Regiment, 1st battalion on 6th April 1918. The battalion were at Montrecourt Wood on 15th October preparing for an attack on 16th His personal belongings returned to his mother consisted: letter, photos, religious book, mirror, cards, 2 wallets, watch case and chain and a ring. |
