Born in 1893(3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:768) son of Charles and Mary Edith Oliver (née LEECH)

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at 76 Risbygate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents and sister Gwendoline. Brothers Kenneth and George were at Framlngham College. His sister Olive and Sybil were at Ladies College at St.Helier, Jersey.

1911 census...Aged 17, studying farming, he was boarding with farm bailiff James MIEKLE and his family at Colehay, Andoversford, Glos. His parents seem to be holidaying at Brandon House, Undecliffe, Felixstowe. At 20 Northgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds were his sisters Olive Agnes, and Sybil Emily; brothers Kenneth William and George Gordon

His brother Guy died in Gallipoli in August 1915 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

Ernest Oliver is commemorated on a special memorial in Dar es Salaam War Cemetery
initially buried in Bweho Chini Military cemetery but the grave was lost
