Born in 1876 in Reed's Buildings, Bury St.Edmunds (4th qtr 4a:551) son of Robert James and Christabella PEARL (née WHITE). Baptised in St.James, Bury St.Edmunds on 18th December 1876

1881 census...Aged 4, he was at 3 Chalk Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Robert PEARL [38] groom; his mother Christobella [40] born London; sisters Elizabeth H [13], Jessie A [12], Helena E [9] and Laura A [6]. All except his mother were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1891 census...Aged 14, he was at 1 Chalk Lane with his parents(father general labourer); sister Laura A (dressmaker); cousin Nellie FENNER [3] born Bury St.Edmunds

1901 census...not found in this census. At 6 Looms Lane, Bury St.Edmunds were his parents; sister Elizabeth, sister Eleanor WILKINS (Helena in 1881) and her children Maurice [3] born Calcutta, Cyril [2] born Jersey and Reginald [9 months]born Bury St.Edmunds; nephew Edward PEARL [9] and niece Nellie PEARL [3]both born Bury St.Edmunds

He married Miriam HANKIN [3-12-1874] in India

1911 census...Aged 34, he was a Corporal at Married Quarters, Granby Barracks, Devonport with wife Miriam [31] born Worcester and daughter Eva Muriel [26-9-1909] born Poona, India

Charles and Mirina had a further 3 children, Robert Edgar [6-5-1911], Edward Charles [20-2-1913] and Herbert William [26-1-1915]


He enlisted in Ipswich. The war diary records "No attacks of any importance - heavy shelling but does no harm". Presumably, if he were able, Charles might dispute this.
