Born in 1896 (1st qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4aa:788) son of Henry and Charlotte Frances PECKHAM (née BURROUGHS)

1901 census...Aged 5, he was still at 36 Peckham Street with his parents (father now bricklayer's labourer), brothers Frederick (bricklayer's labourer), and Edward [11]; sisters Lucy, Caroline |(both domestics), Emma (tailoress), Lottie [3] and Maude [10 months].

1911 census...Aged 16 a telegraph boy he was at 36 Peckham Street still with his parents, sisters Lucy, Carrie, Emma. Lottie and Maud; brother William (telegraph boy). His mother had lost 2 of her 12 children. Brother Edward was a Private in the 2nd Bedfordshires in Bermuda.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. In the battle to take Gaza, the battalion were taking their objectives and on the night of 4th November they were consolidating and re-organising the line, taking over the whole El 'Arish redoubt. They had 4 men killed.
