Born in New Brimington, Derbyshire in 1878 (1st qtr Chesterfield 7b:661) son of Isaac and Hannah PETTITT (née BIRD). Baptised at Church of Hope 3rd February 1878.

1881 census...Aged 3, he was at 1 Mount Pleasant, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Isaac PETTITT [28] Maltster's labourer born Great Welnetham; his mother Hannah [35] born Felsham,; sister Ellen M [8] born Gt Welnetham;; brother William J [6] born Bury St.Edmunds.

1891 census...Aged 13, he was at 60 Cannon Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents (father now foreman maltster); sisters Ellen and Ethel [6]; brothers William (maltster's labourer) and John[4] (Ethel and John born in Bury St.Edmunds)

His mother died in 1900. He married Anna WHISTLER [27-3-1879] in 2nd qtr 1900.

1901 census...Aged 23, a railway goods porter, he was at 20 Lambert's Row, Bury St.Edmunds with his wife Anna [22] born Bury St.Edmunds and her grandmother widow Hannah Rolfe. At 19 Etna Road were his widower father; sister Ethel [16] and brother Thomas [14] [John?].

1911 census...Aged 33, a churchyard attendant, he was at 15 Tollgate Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his wife and father in law, widower Walter Whistler [53] labourer born Thetford.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. Frederick has a rare distinction of being an OR named in a war diary. In fact the short entry simply has ""Vierstraat 22nd May 16861 Pte Pettitt killed and one man wounded".
