Born in Great Welnetham in 1886 (2nd qtr Thingoe 4a:695) son of Thomas and Sarah PETTITT (née PEARSON)

His mother had died early in 1891

1891 census...Aged 4, he was at Austin's Cottages, Great Welnetham with his widower father Thomas PETTITT [49] farm labourer born Nowton; brothers John T 15, farm labourer, George H [13] farm labourer born Portsmouth and William [6 months]; sisters Hannah [11], Frances [6] and Alice L [3] All except his father and brother George were born in Great Welnetham

1901 census...Aged 15, farm labour, he was at 5 Holt's Row, Great Welnetham with his father;sisters Hannah and Alice; brother William. Hannah and Charles are now recorded as born in Nowton and their father in Great Welnetham

1911 census...Not positively identified, quite possibly in the Army His father was a boarder with the STEELE family at 13 Church Row, Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The war diary is short and to the point..."Oct 26 to Nov 15th the regiment was heavily engaged most of the time, in fact on Nov 14th there were only two officers left and about 300 men"
