Born in 1892 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:750) son of Ellen PETTITT. His mother married Walter NUNN in qtr 4 1892.

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at 30 Long Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds with his stepfather Walter NUNN [29] fishnhawker; his mother Ellen [27]; half sisters Edith [7] and Ethel [11 months]; half brother Frederick [2]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds. Ernest was recorded as NUNN

1911 census...Aged 19, he was a private in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment at Bhurtpore Military Barracks, South Tidworth, Hampshire. The family were still at 30 Long Brackland Bury St.Edmunds, later moving to 18A Long Brackland.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The 2nd Loyal North Lancashires were in India up to the start of the war and the battalion was sent immediately to East Africa. The clasp for the 1914 Star was restricted to France/Flanders.
