Recorded as POULDEN, he was born in 1890 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:717) son of George and Emma POLDEN (née POWELL)

1891 census...Aged 6 months he was at 63 Out Westgate, Bury St.Edmunds with his father George POLDEN [42] bricklayer born Kinson, Dorset; his mother Emma [39] born Little Blakenham, sisters Ruth [15], Alice [14], Martha [12] and Edith [3]; brothers William [10], Frank [8] and Richard [5]. All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at 63 Out Westgate, Bury St.Edmunds with his parent; sisters Ruth [26], Martha [22], Edith [13] and Kate [3]; brothers William [20] stonemason, Frank [17] steam engine fitter, Richard [16] jeweller's assistant, Charles Robert [8].

1911 census...Aged 19 a jeweller's porter, he was at 59 Westgate Street,Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; sisters Ruth and Martha; brothers William and Charles Robert (printer); and niece Nellie Ivy Polden [3]

His brother Frank won the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1916 in France


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

The battalion were in trenches at Suvla Bay, ill prepared for hill fighting and the climate. Disease was claiming as many men, if not more, than the Turks
