Born in 1873 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:525 )son of Robert Henry and Mary Ann POTTER (née BAYLDON)

1881 census...Aged 7, he was at 19 College Street,Bury St.Edmunds with his father Henry POTTER [35] coach smith born Diss; his mother Mary Ann [29]; brother Ernest [6]and Frank [2]; sister Maude [3 months] All except his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1891 census...Not found in this census. At 13 St.Andrews Street,Bury St.Edmunds were his parents, brothers Ernest, Frank and Claude [5]; sisters Maude, Kate [7], Addie [2] and Ethel [2 months]

He married Sarah Ann CROSS [27-2-1873] in 4th qtr 1898 in Bury St.Edmunds

1901 census...Not found in this census, presumably in the Army in South Africa. His wife Sarah has not been found either. At 8 St Andrews Street South were his parents , sisters Maud, Addie, Ethel and Daisy [7]; brother Claud.

1911 census...Aged 38 a carriage smith, he was at 11 Mustow Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his wife Sarah [37], sons Reginald [8] and Claude [4]. Still at 8 St Andrews Stb South were his parents, brother Frank and sisters Ethel and Daisy.

On the pension card his widow and son Claude [30-5-1907] were at 36 The Butts, Bury St.Edmunds. His son Reginald had died in 1913.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. It is recorded he served in South Africa. The medal shown above is attributed to Shoe Smith, Herbert Potter. He never served overseas in WW1 hence no medals for that campaign
