Born in 1890 (1st qtr 1890 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:754) son of John and Lucy PRIGG (née WILSON)

1891 census...Aged 1, he was at 51 Raingate Street,Bury St.Edmunds with his father John PRIGG [30] shoe maker; his mother Lucy [30] machinist; sisters Maud [9], Alice Sophie [6] and Violet Lily [4].All were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

Educated at Guildhall, Feoffment Boy's School

1901 census...Aged 11, he was at 18 Raingate Street with his parents; sisters Maud, Alice, Violet, Ethel [8], Florrie [5] and Edith [3]

1911 census...Aged 20 he was in Bhurtpore Barracks, South Tidworth, a private in 1st Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. At 18 Raingate Street still were his parents and sisters Emma, Violet Lily, Florence May, Edith Ivy, Daisy Victoria [9] and Olive Beatrice [7].


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
War Diary
14th Sept 1914...Battalion left MOULIN 5 am to support Sussex and Rifles - rearguard to hold ridge on either side of VENDRESSE Road to cover advance of 1st Brigade. The Battalion came under fire on the road to VENDRESSE and was placed in ? S of village. At 8 am 2 platoons C Coy (Knowles and Colson) advanced in support of Sussex and eventually came up to the Guards. These platoons afterwards joined their Coys in Reserve at TROYON
At about 8:30 am the Battalion was ordered to reinforce 1st brigade attacking enemy holding the ridge at the factory at TROYON. B and D Coys advanced into the firing ;line on both sides of the road taking up a fire position about 300 yards N of the word TROYON. They came under heavy shell fire and rifle fire. A Company came up in support and were very heavily fired on. Towards dusk our firing line all along the line were pressed back on the ;line running W and E of the word TROYOn.
The casualties were very heavy indeed. This line was entrenched during the night the 1st Guards (Bde?) on our left and the Northamptons and Queens on our right. There was a little sniping during the night, but no direct attack was made.
