Herbert Golding ROLFE was born in 1876 (3rd qtr 1876 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:553) son of Robertson and Elizabeth ROLFE (née HUNT). Baptised at St. James on 13th September 1876.



1881 census...Aged 4, he was at 1 Cemetery Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Robertson ROLFE [30], a corn merchant, Bury St.Edmunds born; his mother Elizabeth [30] born Burwell; brother Cecil Alfred [2] born Bury St.Edmunds. His elder brother Robertson Ernest was at 105 Fitzroy Street, Cambridge with his uncle and aunt James and Ann SALISBURY (née HUNT))

1891 census...Aged 14, he was at 13 Risbygate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brothers Ernest Robertson [15], Cecil A [11], James J [9], Henry L [8]; sisters Ruby W [5] and Gladys M [3].

1901 census...He was in South Africa, his family were still at 13 Risbygate Street.


He enlisted firstly in the Western Province Mounted Rifles but was serving with Kitchener's Fighting Scouts when he was killed at Elandshoek

On 29th November 1901 Colonel Colenbrander, with half of KFS, pressed on ahead of the remainder of the column upon Baden-horst's traces, and following them closely till the morning of 3rd December, Colonel Colenbrander, after a long and exhausting chase through an almost waterless region, came suddenly upon the enemy and captured 15 prisoners, with all the waggons of the commando. The remainder of the Scouts were successful in killing 3 and capturing 17 Burghers, while 60 stragglers were driven into the hills near Sterkfontein.
Herbert is recorded as killed in action at Waterburg and also Elandshoek, Elandshoek being a farm in the Waterburg district.

He must have qualified for the Queen's South Africa medal, but any clasps are unknown




Herbert Rolfe is commemorated on the Cornhill Memorial, Bury St.Edmunds.
