Born in 1895 in Gedding (2nd qtr Stow 4a:672) son of Elizah and Anna ROSE (née OSBORNE). His parents previously had a son Frank Fitzroy ROSE in 1882 who sadly died in 1883

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Brand's lane, Lawshall with his father Elizah ROSE [43] horsekeeper born Drinkstoen; his mother Anna [40] born Drinkstone; sisters Margaret [20] born Drinkstone, and Beatrice [1] born Onehouse; cousin Alice [2] born Gedding

1911 census...Aged 16, a servant, he was at Chilton Rectory, Sudbury. At 54 Horringer Road, Bury St.Edmunds were is parents, sisters Alice Elizabeth and Elise Grace [8] born Lawshall; cousin Beatrice


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The War Diary:-
Coulommiers, Tuesday 8th 6:5 am Continued pursuit in a NNE direction
10 am An attack was made by 14th Brigade from DOUE on St.OUEN. Battalion and 2nd Manchester Regiment in support.Little resistance was met with.
2 pm Battalion formed part of an advance guard as far as CHAMPTORTET.
8 pm Bivouaced in a field near ROUGEVILLe, S of SAACY.
