Born in 1879 in Marske, Yorks (3rd qtr Guisbrough 9d:522) son of Joseph and Hannah ROWELL- (née LEE)

1881 census...Aged 2, he was at Cut Flat Lane Railway Cottages, Marske with his fatherJoseph ROWELL [29] railway labourer born Littleport; his mother Hannah [29] born Powick, Worcs; brothers Henry [4] born Saltburn and Arthur [8 months] born Marske.

1891 census...Aged 12, he was still at Railway Cottages, Marske with his parents, brothers Henry, Arthur and Albert [3].

His mother died in 1896 and father married Downham born Maria MILLER in 1900

1901 census...Aged 22, he was a private in the Suffolk Regiment at the Depot in Bury St.Edmunds. His father and stepmother Maria [47] were at East side of market place, Ely with his brothers Albert and Thomas [9].

1911 census...Aged 32,single, he was a Corporal in the 2nd Suffolks at Barossa Barracks, Stanhope Lines, Aldershot. His parents and brother Thomas were at Market Street, Ely

He married Esther Muriel ESTLEA in 4th qtr 1914 in Bury St.Edmunds. His widow was at East Barton.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He died in the Military Hospital, Colchester from Influenza and Pleurisy
The white edged purple medal ribbon is his Long Service and Good Conduct medal





Charles Rowell is buried in Great Barton (Holy Innocents) Churchyard, NW boundary
