Born in 3rd qtr 1918 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:1235, son of Walter Ellis and Sylvia Mary RUSHBROOKE (née PETT). His widowed mother was at 39 Chalk Road, Bury St.Edmunds in the 1939 register, with his sister Phyllis [4-12-1921]. His father died in 1928.


The 5th Green Howards had been trying to defend Arras but to no avail. Pulling back to Dunkirk, tasked with defending Dunkirk, they could not get on the last boat from the Mole and managed to escape via the dunes and beaches at Bray, the last unit to get away. The 4th Battalion left Dunkirk on the 2nd and the 5th on the 3rd June,
