Born in 1896 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:805) son of John and Hannah SANDERS (née OSBORNE)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at 60 Out Westgate, Bury St.Edmunds with his father John William SANDERS [46] hardware shop porter, born Whepstead; his mother Hannah [31] born Fornham; brother Frank [16] office boy and Charles William [13]. The children were all born in Bury St.Edmunds.

His father died in 1902

1911 census...Aged 14, milkman, he was still at 60 Out Westgate with his widowed mother.

His mother later moved to 6 Kings Road, Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Norwich. 238 Siege Battery was raised at Sheerness in August 1916. No war diary has been found and it is notoriously difficult to pin down the movements of Artillery units, even the "heavies".
