Born in 1890 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a;720) son of Horace Arthur and Jennie SAWYER (née PARKER)

1891 census...Aged 8 months, he was at 30 Churchgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Horace A SAWYER [38] butcher; his mother Emma Jane [27] born Ely; sister Constance M [3]. All except his mother were born in Bury St.Edmunds.His sister Julia Parker SAWYER was with her grandparents James and Elizabeth SAWYER at 42 Churchgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds.

Sister Constance died in 1891

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at 42 Churchgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; sisters Julia P [15], Elizabeth C [9], Adelaide M [7], Margaret [3] and Marion [1]; brother James [5]

1911 census...Aged 20, a butcher, he was at 42 Churchgate Street still, with his parents sisters Adelaide, Margaret and Marion; brothers James and Charles John [2]. His mother had lost 2 of her 10 children.

He married May Julia SALMON [21-5-1886] in Bury St.Edmunds in 1915, later of 60 College Street, Bury St.Edmunds


He enlisted in Saxmundham.

On 24th October the 61st Division attacked over the River Ecaillon and within 2 hours the 11th Suffolks had taken their objectives, capturing 110 prisoners. Soon however, the Brigade on their left having been held up outside Vendegies, the enemy counter attacked the leading companies from the left flank, leading to them having to form a defensive flank and touch was not regained with the left until evening. The Germans, under pressure, withdrew from Vendegies during the night.

CWGC records 37 killed, all bar 3 being buried in Vendegies Cross Roads cemetery.
