SMITH, Alfred Victor

No.9019, Private, Alfred Victor SMITH
Aged 27

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died whilst a PoW on Saturday, 20th July 1918

Born Albert Victor SMITH on 5th April 1891 at 13 Chapel Row, Bury St.Edmunds (3rd qtr 1891 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:804) son of Arthur and Sabina SMITH (née BULL). Baptised 16thy July 1891 in St John's, Bury St.Edmunds.
Albert or Alfred seems to be switched regularly, it was the family who registered him as Albert but used Alfred instead for some reason.

1901 census...Aged 9 (Alfred) He was at 14 Long Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds with his father James Arthur SMITH [32] livery groom born Great Yarmouth; his mother Sabina [27] born Bury St.Edmunds; sisters Florence [7], Sabina [4], Gladys [3] and Ethel [1]; brother Percy [5]. All except Alfred and his mother were born in Great Yarmouth

1911 census...He has not been found in this census. It is doubtful if he was in the Army since his number indicates enlisted in August 1914. His parents, brothers James [5] and George [1] (both born in Bury St.Edmunds); sisters Gladys, Edith, Mabel [7] and Maud [3] (both born Bury St.Edmunds) were in the Workhouse, 36 Mill Road, Bury St.Edmunds.

At the age of 50, his father served in the Royal Fusiliers from February to October 1920, in France, returning to 28 Short Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds. 28 Short Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

The only card on International Red Cross is a list of those where they have little data, it has Suffolk Regt 9019 as Albert SMITH and all they have is that he was in hospital in Mulheim. The pension card says he was at Munster 3 prison camp. There is no indication as to where or when he was captured
