1881 census...Aged 1 month he was at 38 Garland Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Arthur SNAZEL [31] bricklayer; his mother Hannah [28]; brothers Alfred [8], William [7] and Arthur [5]; sister Ruth Blanch [2]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds. 1891 census...Aged 10, he was at 5 Long Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brothers Alfred []18] a gardener, William [17] butcher's assistant, Arthur [15] errand boy and Bertie [5]; sisters Ruth [12] and Lily [7].All were born in Bury St.Edmunds. 1901 census...Aged 20, a bricklayer he was still at 5 Long Brackland with his parents; brothers Alfred (iron fitter) and Bert Edw SNAZELL (labourer in foundry); sisters Lily and Florence [10]. He married Ada Elizabeth M COX [1-10-1886] in Cowes, Isle of Wight in 1910. 1911 census...Aged 26 (sic), an assurance agent, he was at 7 St Mary's Road, Cowes, Isle of Wighj with his wife Ada Edith [26] born Ramsgate, Kent and their son Herbert Frank Arthur [8 months] born East Cowes. He is also recorded as an Army pensioner. They went on the have 2 more children, Albert Edward [9-4-1912] and Ethel Hilda [21-7-1914], living at 46 Westgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds. He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 15th September 1903, giving his age as 18 years 9 month, a single bricklayer born in Bury St.Edmunds. He was in the
2nd Volunteer battalion of the Suffolk Regiment and had previously been rejected as his chest measurement was below requirements. He was 5 feet 3.5
inches tall, chest 31-5 to 32.5 inches, weighed 112 lbs, blue eyes, dark brown hair, Church of England. Initially enlisting for 3 years, he extend to complete 7 years on 22nd August 1906 and completed that period of service on 14th September 1910. He was firstly 1st battalion, then posted to the 2nd Battalion in May 1908. He served at home from 15/9/1903 to 19/11/1907, then Malta 20/11/1907 to 9/3/1908a and in UK Mobilised in August 1914 he was posted to 2nd Battalion and proceed to the BEF on 13th August 1914. (his medal index card says 23rd but the battalion left Dublin for France on 13th). Evacuated to UK on 19th October 1914 he was medically discharged on 16th January 1915 and by 1916 he was 100% incapacitated The fact that he had been out of the Army for more than 2 years and the clasp was not instituted until 1919 may be why he has no clasp, despite being in France/Flanders in August 1914. His widow probably was unaware of it or chose not to claim it. His death was due to Diabetes and exhaustion contributed to by his military service
