Born in 1880 (1st qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:613) son of John and Euty SOUTHGATE (née HAYWARD)

1881 census...Aged 1, he was at 14 Victoria Place, Bury St.Edmunds with his father John SOUTHGATE [33] tinman ; mother Euty [36] both born in Stowmarket; brother Frank [12] born Bury St.Edmunds, brother John [10] born Ipswich, sisters Ruth [6] and Antonina [3] both born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1891 census...Aged 11, he was at 39 Tayfen Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brothers Frank (grocer's assistant), John E (clerk) and Spencer [7]; sister Antonina.

1901 census...Aged 21 a house painter, he was still at 39 Tayfen Road with his parents; sister Nina; brothers John (fishmonger's clerk) and Spencer (upholsterer's apprentice.)

1911 census...Aged 30, a house painter, he was at 24 Bishop's Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his mother and brother Spencer (upholsterer). His father was in the Mill Road Workhouse and Infirmary

Brother Spencer enlisted in Suffolks in 1915 and was medically discharged in 1916


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The battalion he was in at the time of his death is unknown. CWGC have 13th (disbanded in Feb.1918), the roll of honour has 2nd/6th (disbanded in Jan.1918), Find a Grave has 4th (stationed in Egypt). This being it is even more impossible than usual to say where and when he was wounded
