Born in 1893( 2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:784) son of Frederick Arthur and Kate Hardy STANNARD (née PEARSONS).

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at 113 Cemetery Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Frederick A [36] bricklayer; his mother Kate H [38] born Great Welnetham; brothers Walter F [14] chemist's porter and Albert [1]; sisters Lilian R [12] and Alice A [10]. All except his mother were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 17, porter, he was at 7 Chalk Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brothers Walter F (labourer) and Albert Edward; sister Alice. His mother had lost 4 of her 9 children.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

After abortive attempts to take Bellewarde Farm on 24th, the battalion were continuously shelled on 25th. Stragglers came back during the day, but when relieved only 3 officers and 181 other ranks marched back through Ypres to Balloon Wood, near Vlamertinghe.
