Born on 30th September 1891 at 1 Ceres Villa, Kingston (4th qtr Kingston on Thames 2a:327) son of Thomas and Elizabeth Mary STEVENS (née TEARLE). Baptised
at All Saints, Kingston on 29th November 1891.
1901 census...Aged 9, he was at 114 Northgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Thomas STEVENS [39] mechanical/electrical engineer; his mother Elizabeth M [41] born Boreham Wood; brother Frank D [8]; sisters Dorothy M [10]and Margaret A.L. [6]. All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds. 1911 census...Aged 19, articled to a surveyor, he was at 117 Fornham Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brother Frank Douglas (articled to mechanical engineer); sister Margaret Agnes Lucy. |
He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
On the 26th September, the battalion was attacking the German trenches near Loos when L/Cpl Sidney Day saw his commanding officer, Lieutenant Thomas Stevens, being badly wounded. He lifted Lt Stevens onto his shoulders to try and get him back to their own lines, but they were spotted by a German sniper who shot Lt Stevens dead and wounded Day.
