Born in Stowmarket in 4th qtr 1899 (Stow 4a:882) son of Frederick William and Annie Sophia Maude TARRANT (née GRAY)

1901 census...Aged 1, he was at Unity Road, Stowmarket with his father Fred TARRANT [29] wine merchant's clerk; his mother Maude [27] born Cheshunt; sister Dora [3]. All except his mother were born in Stowmarket.

1911 census...Aged 11, he was at 16 Childer Road, Stowmarket with his parents; sisters Dora and Barbara [8]; brothers Alan [6] and Jack[3].

His family later moved to 60 Victoria Street, Bury St.Edmunds


He enlisted in Ipswich.

On the 12th, large attacks were being made by 4th Army. The battalion were operating south of the main BRAY- CORBIE Road. Zero was 4:20 am. Early objectives were gained and 53rd Brigade gained the 3rd objective but were forced out by a counter-attack. Ground gained was consolidated. Casualties were just over 300 and as a result the battalion was re-organised into two companies. 300 prisoners had been taken and 30 machine guns, 8 TMs and an anti tank gun
