Born 19th July 1885 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:603) son of Robert Edward and Ruth Marsh TAYLOR (née NEWELL)

1891 census...Aged 5, he was at 21 Springfield Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Robert Edward TAYLOR [28] printer/compositor; his mother Ruth Marsh [27] and sister Ettie Helena [5 months]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1901 census...Aged 15, an apprentice journalist, he was at 39 Queen's Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents and sister Ettie

1911 census...Aged 25, a journalist, he was boarding at 51 York Road, Waltham Cross with Richard and Mary Ann SHARPE and their daughter Eliza Jane [32]

In 1912, in Edmonton, he married Gertrude Laura HALL [8-6-1886]


He attested in Cheshunt on 18th November 1915 and was mobilised in the Honourable Artillery Company on 2nd May 1916. He gave his age as 30m years 4 months, a married journalist, of 38 York Road, Waltham Cross. 5 feet 7.5 inches tall, chest 30 to 34 inches, weighing 133 lbs. Next of kin, his wife Gertrude Laura of 38 York Road, Waltham Cross.

He embarked for BEF at Southampton 1st October 1916, arriving le Havre on 3rd and proceeding to the front on 4th. Reported missing 5th May 1917.

Red Cross records show him wounded in shoulder and both legs by shrapnel and taken prisoner on 5th May 1917, taken to Military Hospital, Tournai and dying in a military hospital in Hameln. He was taken at Bullecourt
