Born in 1894 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:747) son of George and Rosetta Jane THIRTLE (née SEATES)

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 23 Out Westgate, Bury St.Edmunds with his father George THIRTLE [35] born Aylsham, Norfolk; his mother Rosetta [36]; sister Anne Jane [5] and Mary Rosalie [1]; brothers Herbert George [4] and Harry Robert; grandmother Martha SEATES [68]. All except his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 17, a baker's assistant, he was still at 23 Westgate Street with his parents; sisters Annie Jane (shop assistant), Mary Rosalie and Florence Martha [6]; brothers Herbert George (grocer's assistant), Harry Robert and Charles Frederick; grandmother Martha SEATES.

His brother Herbert died in France in 1916 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

The British still had to maintain a guard on the Suez Canal after the war and Alfred was one of that garrison, dying of cardiac arrest in Cairo.
