Born in 1887 (2nd qtr B 4a:726) son of William and Lydia THURSTON (née BLANDON)

1891 census...Aged 3, he was at 48 Victoria Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father William THURSTON [44] bell hanger/gas/water fitter, born WOODBRIDGE; his mother Lydia [44] born Halesworth; sisters Beatrice [18], Florence [12] and Lilian [5]; brothers William [16]clothier's porter, Arthur J [6] and Albert F [1]. All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1901 census...Aged 13, he was still at 48 Victoria Street with his parents, sister Beatrice; brothers Arthur (draper's porter) and Frank A [11]; cousins Mabel [4] and Edith [5 months]

1911 census...Aged 23, a labourer, he was at 71 Queens Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents, sister Beatrice; brother Albert (motor fitter); cousins Mabel and Edith

His father died in 1916.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

War Diary:-
Support trenches..Bn proceeded to MAROC and after a halt for a few hours in billets, took over the support trenches in Loos Sub section from 2nd York and Lancs. Disposition, all 4 Coys in OGI . Battn came under the orders of G.O.C. 16th Infantry Brigade. Casualties 7 OR wounded.
