Alexander Free was born in Castle Camps (Linton Q1-1885 3B:557), son of Walter and Eliza FREE (née LEONARD).

1891 census...Aged 6, Alec was at Haverhill Road, Castle Camps with his father Walter FREE [29] coal merchant; his mother Eliza [31]; brothers Albert [9] and Joseph [2]; sister Edith[8]. All were born in Castle Camps.

1901 census...Aged 16,(occupation not recorded) Alexander was at The Fox Beer House with his parents, (father now Inn Keeper); brothers Albert (carman) Joseph and Hilbert [6]; sisters Edith, May [9],Isabel [5] and Dora [3].The new siblings all born in Castle Camps.

In 1910 he married Ethel FREEMAN.(b.4-11-1883)

1911 census...Aged 26, general carrier, he was at High Street, Castle Camps with his wife Ethel [27] born Castle Camps. His parents, father a carrier, were at The Gables, Castle Camps with Joseph (labourer), Hilbert (labourer), Bell and Dora.

The pension card has his widow at Great Shelford.


Alexander enlisted in Cambridge. He was killed shortly after the 3rd battle of Ypres ( known as Passchendaele), not far from Passchendaele Military Cemetery

War diary:- 22/11- C Coy moves up to CREST FARM and A Coy supplies a working party of 2 platoons to help them dig fortifications and accommodation there after dusk.
D Coy moves to vicinity of HAMBURGH 10.am. B Coy carrying up shelters for them to make accommodation with. Casualties two.
