George Argent was born 1876 (2nd qtr 1876 Thingoe 4a:552) son of Robert and Mary Ann ARGENT (née WATSON)

1881 census...Aged 5, he was at Queen's Hill, Chedburgh with his father Robert ARGENT [50] master boot maker born Chevington; his mother Mary A [34] born Durham; sisters Elizabeth [10], Susan [3] and Clara [8 months]. All the children were born in Chedburgh.

1891 census...Aged 15, farm labourer, he was at Queen's Hill Cottages, Chedburgh with his parents; sisters Elizabeth, Susan, Clara, Annie [8] Lucy [6] and Charlotte [4]

1901 census...Aged 25, a farm labourer, he was still at Queen's Hill with his widowed mother and sister Margaret and Charlotte. His father had died in 1898.

1911 census...Aged 35, a farm labourer still, he and his mother had moved to Weathercock Hill, Chevington. All 8 siblings still survived

On the pension card his mother was at Queen's Road, Chevington.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He died at 34 Casualty Clearing Station, at La Chapelette near Peronne, France
With no service record found and dying of his wounds it is impossible to say exactly when or where he was wounded. The 12th battalion however had taken part in a large raid on La Vacquerie, part of the Hindenburg Line, earlier in May
