Robert George Bailey was born Great Thurlow (2nd qtr 1888 Risbridge 4a:660) son of George and Jane Anna BAILEY (née CRICK)
1891 census...Aged 2, he was at "Huliea", Great Thurlow with his father George BAILEY, farm labourer [36] born Stradishall; his mother Jane A [37] born Brockley; sisters Elizabeth [11], Agnes [9], Violet Annie[5] and Tabitha [6 months]; brother William W [7]. All the children were born Great Thurlow. 1901 census...Aged 12, a helper in stockyard, he was at Sawley Green, Gt Thurlow with his father George BAILEY [46] horsekeeper on farm, born Stradishall; his mother Jane [47] born Brockley; brothers William [17] horsekeeper, Stanley [4] and Oscar [2]; sisters Violet [15], Tabitha [10] and Margie [8]. All the children were born in Great Thurlow. 1911 census...Aged 22,a labourer, he was at Hall Farm, Chedburgh with his parents (father now farm bailiff); brothers William (horseman), Stanley (cattleman) and Oscar; sister Maggie and niece Edie SAMS [6] born Cowlinge. All 9 siblings still survive. On the pension card his mother was at Hall Farm Chedburgh, but CWGC have his mother at The Lodge, Cowlinge His brother Oscar died of wounds earlier in the year, and is buried in France see here |

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
Machine gun companies are very difficult to locate, but it was of course in the Battle of Cambrai,the first major tank battle.
