John Ashman was born in 1899 (2nd qtr 1899 Thingoe 4a:860) son of John and Ruth ASHMAN (née SHARPE)

1901 census...Aged 2, he was at Queens Cottage, Chevington with his father John ASHMAN [31] bricklayer; his mother Ruth [32] and half-sister Flora SHARPE [13]. All were born in Chevington

1911 census...Aged 12, they were "by Chedburgh Road, Chevington, with the addition of a brother, James [9].



He registered in Bury St.Edmunds on 24th April 1917 and was mobilised on 15th June 1917, giving his age as 18 years 2 months, a warehouseman living at Garrod's Farm, Chevington. His next of kin as his father John, of that address. He was 5 feet 3.75 inches tall, chest 31.5 to 33.5 inches, weighed 109 lbs.
He was admitted, unconcious, to hospital at Rugeley Camp, Cannock Chase on 25th January 1918, was in a critical condition next day, and worsened despite all efforts and died on 3rd February. Cause was cerebro spinal fever.




John Ashman is buried in Chevington (All Saints) Churchyard, north of church
