Ernest Arthur Copping was born in Wickhambrook (4th qtr 1891 Risbridge 4a:684) was born son of Arthur and Melinda Jane COPPING (née BONNETT). His mother died in 1894 and father married Emily WELLS in 1895

1901 census...Aged 9. he was at The Hall Cottage, Chevington with his father Arthur COPPING [42] horsekeeper on farm; step mother Emily; brothers Frederick [15] and Charles {12];step sister Kate Wells [9]; half sister Lily Jane [3] and half brother Harry Victor [1]. All were born in Wickhambrook.

1911 census...Aged 19, a farm labourer, he was at Almswater Cottages, Chevington with his parents; brothers William, Frederick and Charles(all farm labourer); half brothers Harry, Alfred [8], Edward [6] and Arthur [1];half sisters Lizzie [9], Violet [4] and Florence [2] All thee children after Harry were born in Chevington

On the pension card his father was at Charity Cottage, Chevington

His brother Charles died of malaria in Gaza in 1918 see here
and brother William was killed in action in 1918 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
With no service record available and dying of wounds, it is not possible to tell exactly were or when he was wounded. The battalion was at rest at Annezin, but of course was sending out work parties which was probably when Ernest was hit.
