George Henry ARBIN was born in Livermere on 14th September 1893 (4th qtr 1893 Thingoe 4a:725), son of Henry Charles and Eliza ARBIN (née ARBIN).

1901 census...Aged 7, as George Henry ARBON, he was "near The Greyhound", Cockfield, with his father Henry Charles ARBON, [43] horseman on farm, born Bury St. Edmunds; his mother Eliza [41] born West Stow; sisters Lillie [14] and Maud [13] both born West Stow and Emma [2] born Cockfield. There were two other siblings in 1891, Mary and William.

1911 census...Aged 17, a milk cart driver, he was Chapel House, Scotswood, Wallbottle, Northumberland working for Edward and Violet Ann TWIDDELL. His parents were at Greyhound Cottage, Cockfield with his sisters Maud and Emma; nephew Frederick J ARBON, born Cockfield
The pension card has his mother Eliza ARBIN at Greyhound Cottages, Cockfield and death from natural causes. His death certificate gives the cause of death as "natural causes, probably an overdose of alcohol and exposure".


He enlisted on 25th April 1912 for 12 years. He was a labourer, born Little Livermere. 5 feet 3.3 inches tall, 36 inch chest, dark brown hair, brown eyes, scar on forehead.
Training was at HMS Victory II until 20th July 1912, then HMS Renown until 14th September 1912. Back to Victory until 12th November then to HMS Sappho until 30th January 1913. Then another spell at Victory until joining HMS Dreadnought on 8th March 1913. Made Stoker 1 on 25th April 1913. He died on 8th January 1915, the form says "Alcohol poisoning whilst on leave" but this has been crossed out and "natural causes" added. The Royal Navy War Graves Roll has him dying of disease and buried in Rosskeen Parish Cemetery, Invergordon, Ross-shire

HMS Dreadnought never took part in any naval battles. Her only claim is that she was the only battleship to have deliberately rammed a submarine, when she sunk U-Boat U29 on 18th March 1915.
