Charles Rowland Carter was born in Little Waldingfield (2nd qtr 1889 Sudbury 4a:691), son of Charles and Elizabeth CARTER (née KEEBLE)
1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Potash No.1, Little Waldingfield with his father Charles CARTER [26] farm labourer born Lavenham; his mother Elizabeth [25] born Monks Eleigh; brother Percy Harry [4] born Monks Eleigh. 1901 census...Aged 12, he was at Stows Hill, Cockfield with his parents, brothers Percy (farm labourer) and Stanley [4] born Brent Eleigh; sisters Clara [9] and Lily [7], both born Little Waldingfield, twins Maurice and Olive [1], born Cockfield. 1911 census...Aged 22, he was a Private in the 1st battalion, Suffolk Regiment, in Egypt, at Mustapha Pasha Barracks, Alexandria. His parents were still at Stows Hill, Cockfield with his brothers Stanley and Maurice; sisters Olive, Eva [7] and Ivy [3]. All ten siblings survive. The pension card has his mother at Stows Hill, Ccckfield. |
He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
On the 18th April 1915 the Battalion had arrived at Zonnebeke, via Hill 60 ( where they were not needed). They relieved the 2nd Cheshires around midnight on 17/18th. They had a hectic day, suffering from a heavy bombardment on a wide front. CWGC records show 7 killed, all buried together about a mile SE of Zonnebeke, before re-interment at Bedford House.
