George Frank Dorling was born in Cockfield (1st qtr 1885 Cosford 4a:681), son of Charles and Anna DORLING (née BRADLEY). Baptised in St Peter's, Cockfield on 22nd February 1885

1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Oak Farm, Cockfield with his father Charles DORLING [43] farm labourer; his mother Anna [37]; brothers James [14] farm labourer and William Frederick [2]; sisters Mary Ann [12] and Sarah [10]. All were born in Cockfield. There was another sister, Ada, who sadly was born and died in 1883.

1901 census...Not found in this census. His parents and brother Frederick were still at Oak Farm, Cockfield.

1911 census...Aged 26, a domestic gardener, he was boarding with Harry and Maud DIAPER in Windsor Green, Cockfield.

He married Sarah Ann HUNT [born Fornham All Saints on 30-6-1880] in 1911.

The pension card has his widow at Windsor Green, Cockfield, later at 2 Grindle Cottages, Bury St. Edmunds. Their son Frederick George was born on 26th September 1915.



He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. The Bury Free Press records he was wounded on 19th April 1917. The 8th Bedfords war diary for that day has:-
19 Apr 1917 - Maroc - All ground previously gained was held despite many bombing attacks by the enemy and a very heavy hostile barrage. At night battalion was relieved by 14th Durham Light Infantry. Relief was not completed until 6.30 am, 20 inst. Battalion moved back to MAROC. Casualties Capt J.E.BLACK, [James Elliot BLACK, MC] RAMC & 2/Lt TAYLOR [John Oswald TAYLOR] killed. 2/Lt Balls [possible Hedley Albert BALLS], Betty [George MacMasters BETTY, MC], Hendrie [James Matthew HENDRIE] & Wright [Donald Samuel WRIGHT] wounded
17 O.R. killed & 91 wounded.


He died in one of the 8 VAD Hospitals in Cheltenham. The Voluntary Aid Detachments were part of the Red Cross, volunteers who assisted in many capacities in the Red Cross. George was taken home to Cockfield for burial.
