George Ford was born in Lavenham (3rs qtr 1890 Cosford 4a:689), son of Harry and Barbara Ellen FORD (née BIGG)
1891 census...Aged 9 months, he was at Alley Yard, Lavenham with his father Harry FORD [34] G.E.R. Platelayer born Long Melford; his mother Ellen [36] born Long Melford; sisters Alethea [13] born Long Melford, Agnes [8] and Elizabeth [3]; brother Harry [6]. All the children except Alethea were born in Lavenham. 1901 census...Aged 10, he was at Station Cottages, Cockfield with his parents; brother Harry; sisters Elizabeth, Katie [5] and Bertha [2], both born Cockfield. 1911 census...Aged 20, a farm labourer, he was still at Station Cottages, Cockfield with his parents, sisters Elizabeth, Kate and Bertha; cousin Basil COPPING [4] born Cockfield. He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
At 4 a.m. on 24th October 1918, with 61st Division, they attacked across the River Ecaillon and within 2 hours had taken all their objectives. including 120 prisoners and trench mortars and machine guns. Their left flank however was up in the air as the Brigade on that flank had been held up at Vendegies. The enemy counter-attacked this weak spot and this forced the Suffolks to form a defensive flank. Touch was not regained with the Brigade on the left flank until the evening when the enemy withdrew from Vendegies. Early next morning the line of objectives had been established. By CWGC records, this had cost the 11th Suffolks 36 killed, all bar 3 are buried at Vendegies Cross Roads.
