HAYWARD, George

No.18447, Private, George HAYWARD
Aged 26

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of his Wounds on 30th May 1918

George Hayward was born in Windsor Green, Cockfield (1st qtr 1892 Cosford 4a:741), son of Abram Willie and Emma HAYWARD (née SMITH).

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Windsor Green, Cockfield with his grandfather Robert HAYWARD [64] farm labourer; his grandmother Abigail [68]; brothers Robert [12] and Reuben [10] both born Shimpling; and sister Emma [6]. All except his brothers were born in Cockfield. His father appears to be Abraham W. Hayward [33] a widower (?), road labourer, was alone at 77 Vicarage Road, Leyton. His mother Emma [1870] born Shimpling, has not been found in this census, or the marriage. This is an un-documented report of a marriage in December 1888 of Emma SMITH to Abraham William HAYWARD but the registration has not been found.

1911 census...Not found in this census. Brother Robert was still with his grandparents at Windsor Green, Cockfield. Brother Reuben was boarding with the REYNOLDS family at Butlers Hall, Whepstead.

The pension card has his mother at 12 Broadway Market, Ilford. The card clearly says 'mother'

Too much data missing...any assistance gratefully received.

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. It is questionable as to whether he died of wounds, or malaria.
